Smiti Malik Releases Intimate Debut Solo EP ‘Sad Songs For A Sunday’

Mumbai, 29th June 2026: Smiti Malik’s debut solo EP, Sad Songs For A Sunday, released on June 24, 2026, marking a deeply personal new chapter in her artistic journey. Featuring five tracks written during the pandemic, the EP emerged from a period of collective uncertainty and emotional disorientation. What began as a way of processing difficult emotions slowly evolved into a body of work that transforms helplessness and overwhelm into something intimate, reflective, and quietly hopeful.

Songs like “Hard Year” explore the feeling of being trapped within spaces, emotions, and situations far beyond one’s control, while “Free” imagines a departure from the restrictive and repetitive structures of everyday life. Initially written as acoustic demos on guitar and piano within a singer-songwriter framework, the songs gradually expanded into richer, more textured sonic landscapes through her collaboration with producer Ritwik De, whose intuitive production helped shape the emotional depth of the record.

“Sad Songs For A Sunday has been a long time coming,” says Smiti. “I wrote these songs during the pandemic, a time that shaped both their emotional core and sonic direction. I think of these songs as love songs written for sadness; written at a time when both felt somewhat inseparable. As my debut solo EP, the process of creating this record has brought me back to my roots as a songwriter, which has been playful and profound in equal measure.”

Ritwik De adds, “I’ve known Smiti for many years and have always admired her music and songwriting. I was genuinely excited for us to create this EP together. Built through conversations, chaos, and creativity, every song carries its own story, crafted with intention, honesty, and something deeply real.”

Smiti Malik is a songwriter, vocalist, and music educator based in New Delhi, known for her introspective songwriting and understated vocal style. A founding member of Kitchensink, she contributed as both writer and vocalist on the band’s debut album Harmless Things (2018), which became a notable release in India’s independent music scene.

Alongside her band work, Smiti has explored more intimate musical collaborations through projects like Chayan and Smiti, and Smiti and Adhir, performing at festivals including NH7 Weekender and Jazz Utsav. Her debut solo EP, Sad Songs For A Sunday, marks a deeply personal new chapter, a collection of songs written during the pandemic that explore vulnerability, stillness, and emotional honesty through expansive yet intimate soundscapes.
