Mumbai, 7th August 2026: The story of the King of Pop is set to continue on the big screen. Following the enormous success of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic starring Jaafar Jackson, Lionsgate is moving ahead with its highly anticipated sequel. The studio has now indicated that filming for Michael 2 is expected to begin toward the end of 2026 or potentially in early 2027. The development comes after Lionsgate executives confirmed that there remains substantial material from Michael Jackson’s life and music career that was not explored in the first film.
The first Michael film covered Jackson’s journey from his childhood and the Jackson 5 era through the height of his solo career in the late 1980s. Its enormous box-office performance created strong momentum for another chapter, while the film itself ended with the words “His Story Continues,” clearly leaving the door open for a sequel. Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson previously confirmed that development was progressing well, adding that there was a wealth of entertaining material and major portions of Jackson’s music catalogue still available to explore.
Interestingly, Michael 2 may already have a head start. Lionsgate previously revealed that approximately 25 to 30 percent of the sequel had already been shot, with unused footage from the original production potentially forming part of the follow-up. This approach could allow the filmmakers to expand Jackson’s story while making use of material captured during the first film’s production. However, several key details about the sequel, including its final storyline, complete cast and release date, remain unconfirmed.
For fans, the prospect of Jaafar Jackson returning as Michael Jackson makes the upcoming sequel particularly intriguing. His performance in the first film introduced a new generation to Jackson’s story while recreating some of the legendary artist’s most recognisable moments. With the sequel expected to explore chapters of Jackson’s career that remained outside the first film, anticipation is already building for what could become an even larger musical and cinematic spectacle. If production begins as currently expected, Michael 2 could arrive sometime in 2027 or early 2028, giving audiences another opportunity to experience the extraordinary legacy of one of music history’s most influential artists.
