Bairi Piya - Shreya Ghoshal

Shreya Ghoshal Expands Her Independent Music Journey With ‘Bairi Piya’

Mumbai, 6th October 2026: Nearly three decades into a career defined by one of Indian music’s most recognisable voices, Shreya Ghoshal continues to explore new creative territory beyond the traditional playback format with her latest independent single, ‘Bairi Piya’. Released via Universal Music India, the track adds another chapter to Shreya’s evolving independent music journey, giving her the space to experiment with different sounds, collaborations and musical environments. While film music remains an important part of her legacy, her independent releases have increasingly allowed her to explore creative directions beyond cinema.

Shreya’s recent independent work has taken her across languages, genres and generations. Her collaboration on ‘Kalyani (Remix)’ with ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4 reimagined MVR’s successful Malayalam independent track, with the original crossing 200 million streams and reaching audiences well beyond Kerala. The remix went on to reach No. 1 on the Indian music charts while also making an impact on global charts, highlighting the growing reach of collaborations that bring established voices into India’s independent music ecosystem.

Speaking about the release, Shreya Ghoshal says, “Independent music has been an important part of my journey for a long time because it gives me the freedom to explore songs and sounds outside the usual spaces I get to experience through playback music. Every independent project has brought something different for me, whether it was experimenting with a sound, collaborating with another artist or simply approaching a song differently. With ‘Bairi Piya’, I was drawn to the melody and the simplicity of the song, and I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space. I think this is what I enjoy most about independent music, the freedom to keep discovering different sides of myself through it.”

With ‘Bairi Piya’, Shreya moves into a contemporary pop setting, embracing a softer and more intimate side of her vocal expression. The song combines warm synths, clean beats and a gentle rhythmic pulse with subtle Indian classical touches, creating a contemporary sound while retaining an unmistakably Indian musical sensibility. For Shreya, the track represents less a departure from her established identity and more an extension of the creative freedom independent music has offered her, allowing her to work across musical worlds and choose songs based on the artistic space they create.
