Mumbai, 15th October 2026: MusiCulture Spotlight for the month of October is about Mumbai-based rapper and visual creative Rae Mulla. Rae blends experimental sounds, radical honesty and surreal visual storytelling to explore desire, loneliness and the contradictions of modern masculinity. He is carving out a distinctive space in India’s alternative hip-hop scene. Blending hip-hop, electronica, breakbeat, psychedelia and alternative pop, his music explores contemporary relationships, desire, loneliness and identity through candid songwriting and unconventional sonic experimentation. With releases such as ‘Never In Love’, ‘Lucky Me’, ‘Breakdown’, ‘PYAAR’, ‘Pantone 448 C’ and ‘Breathe’, alongside his latest single, ‘Girls’, Rae continues to build an artistic identity that moves beyond conventional genre boundaries.
On ‘Girls’, Rae examines the contradictions between sexual bravado and emotional vulnerability, using the language of hookup culture to uncover a deeper longing for intimacy. The track follows a protagonist who boasts about casual encounters while admitting that he misses someone and wants more than a physical connection. Its defining moment arrives through Shreyas’ Marathi verse, which shifts the song from unapologetic bravado to tenderness, revealing the emotional uncertainty beneath its confident exterior. The contrast reflects Rae’s interest in the difference between how intimacy is performed and how it is experienced.
